Escape from the Mindmaster

Posted on Wed, August 29 2007, by Darryl Brundage
Do you ever feel like you're lost in a maze? No? Well, give this game a try. Then you can know what it's like to be lost AND stalked!

Well, here it is, the cream of the crop, one of THE very top games of the entire 2600's library, complete with probably the best 2600 game ending as well (possibly not including some from modern day homebrews though, but hey, we're talking over 20 years after the fact now though!). Taking the old sci-fi concept/storyline of some superior alien race being bored and kidnapping some lowly life form -- why he isn't named "Jobob" or "John Boy" is beyond me thou...

Football

Posted on Mon, August 20 2007, by Brendan Onfrichuk
It's time for football season again! And Madden '08 was just released! Take a trip back to the early days of Atari with the original football game and see how far things have progressed!

When I first played Atari 2600 one of the titles I played if not the first one I played was Football. Just like all of the other sports games available for the 2600 early on, what it lacks in complexity and realism it makes up for in simple-minded fun. Me and my brother can still be found playing game after game of Football on the 2600. After Mattel released more realistic sports games on their Intellivision Atari decided to release a line of RealSports...

Track and Field

Posted on Tue, August 14 2007, by Rob Adair
Admit it. You pounded the heck out of the arcade version of Track and Field. And when you learned there was no 2600 version, you ran out and got the next best thing: Activision's Decathalon. Well, it took Atari many years later, but the arcade game you love finally did make it to the 2600. Check it out...

Track and Field, one of the most unique video games of all time in that it required more than just good hand-eye coordination to excel at it. Instead, you had to have fast fingers as well, being able to tap the buttons as quickly as you could to help your athlete build up enough speed to win the dash, do the long jump, or throw the javelin. It was enough for even the most seasoned players to break a sweat. Yet, win or lose, they always found themselves coming back for more, in hopes of...

Time Warp

Posted on Tue, August 07 2007, by Rob Adair
There truly were an endless supply of shooters back then, weren't there? And what's worse is when you end up with a knock-off that was originally a Taiwanese game! Anyway, here's Rob Adair's review of Zeller's Time Warp.

If you're a big follower of the Atari 2600 during it's heyday, odds are you've probably heard about the Canadian discount store known as Zeller's. This company was similar to stores like Ames, Wal-Mart, and places of that nature. However, one thing that Zeller's was known for doing was publishing Atari 2600 games under their own label, possibly in an effort to 'cash in' on the craze that was sweeping the world at the time. The one noticeable thing about their games was that they came in a gen...

Tower Toppler

Posted on Mon, July 30 2007, by Darryl Brundage
Are you ready to topple some towers? In this game you're a frog (?) roaming around in your submarine (!) shooting fish, attacking towers (?!), shooting eyeballs (!!!!!), and avoiding floating molecules (?????). One of the strangest ideas for a game happens to be one of the best for the 7800...

Here is a way NOT to try to sell a video game idea (or at least to ME, anyway): Scene: the office of a manager at a video game company, with a programmer on his first day at the company. Manager: First off, welcome to the company! Cheeky new employee: Thank you, sir! I’m eager to start! Manager: That’s good, since we’re going to have you jump right in on a new project that’s ready to ...

Tunnel Runner

Posted on Fri, July 13 2007, by Darryl Brundage
Did you think Doom was the first First Person Perspective maze game? Oh, you know it was Wolfenstein 3D right? No wait. It was MIDI-Maze! Or maybe it was Maze War... Anyway, here's an amazing game for your 2600!

Tunnel Runner is a very amazing game, being especially unbelievable that it’s running off a 2600. Granted, it’s one of those “RAM Plus” games, of course, which enables it’s 3-D setting, but it’s still really astounding–and very scary! This is one very scary game, what with monsters popping up out of nowhere (seemingly, at times), which would come with a warning label nowadays if it was remade, advising against people w...

Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters

Posted on Fri, July 06 2007, by Darryl Brundage
This is such a cool idea for a game, it's beyond words... It's a A+ video game made like a B movie! Plenty of robots to shoot and scantily clad women to save. You know what to do...

As old paperwork for Atari pops up over the internet here and there over the years -- billing receipts, orders, etc. -- we've come across another prime example! The following is an excerpt of notes of a meeting in the Atari coin-op division, circa 1988. The following is a snippet that is an exclusive to TAT! (To cut down the bulk of the minutes, we're just presenting the parts that led to the creation of a certain coin-op in particular.) ...

Kangaroo

Posted on Wed, June 27 2007, by Darryl Brundage
Ok, why doesn't Kangaroo get it's fair due? Is it because Mario was first? Is it because of that silly black & white film of a man fighting a kangaroo? Or is it because this isn't really Atari's game? Well, anway. Check out Darryl's review.

First off, the part 1 is in regards to my Arabian review. Also -- and just like Arabian -- Atari didn't make Kangaroo, Sun Electronics did, Atari just distributed it. It also seems like Sun Electronics had a thing for platformers as well. Anyway, gaming in the 80s had it all, especially when it came to those with "saving" themes, such as: 1. Saving a lad...

The Space Incident

Posted on Tue, June 19 2007, by David Sherwin
Now this is the kind of thing we like to see. Surprises! This collection of mini-games came out of nowhere recently and wowed us with some fantastic graphics! Find out what you've been missing out on!

I love it when new games pop up out of the blue, unannounced and unexpected, and it's even better when such surprises come in the form of a fun new title for the Lynx, which hasn't seen a quality game release in a dog's age. Actually, make that four new game releases, because the Lynx's newest title, The Space Incident (Yastuna Vol. 2) is a very neat collection of mini-games (Space Lock, Space Shoot, Space Domino, and Space Dance) that wi...
