Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure - The Atari Times

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure

16-bit Genesis port comes to the 64-bit Jaguar
by Andy Robertson

August 3, 1996
A winner on the 16-bit systems Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure simply has not received enough tweakage to warrant any kind of fanfare on the Jaguar.

This sequel to the Atari VCS original boasts rotoscoped sprites, Flashback type gameplay but nothing that couldn't have and wasn't achieved on the SNES.

This is another game along that does the Jaguar absolutely no justice what so ever and should have never have been released for the next generation console (along with Ruiner and Fever Pitch Soccer to name but two). The SNES can do as good.

Ok, I really don't like the boomarang as a pointing device.
See that ledge? Don't fall off or... Aaaarrrggghhh!!

My Take by Gregory D. George on 1996-08-03 12:00:00
I would tend to agree with much of what Andy has said about this game. It's not much of an advancement over the SNES or Genesis versions.

That being said, I think that, as a game, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure is a fun diversion, regardless of how advanced it is. The graphics are colorful and the animation is very smooth. Sometimes too smooth. The music is very nice with jungle tunes thumping in the background. Unfortunately, the sound effects are too cartoony for my taste.

Gameplay can be somewhat frustrating as you jump higher and higher up certain levels. Guess what happens if you miss a platform? You get to start all over again! This "feature" will kill your fun quicker than seeing your wife with another man.

Overall, it's a fun game, but I wouldn't pay full price. Look for it in the $5-10 range.

Not worthy of the Jaguar by Randy Johnson on 2014-07-22 20:59:55
Atari claimed that the Jaguar is 64 bit but Pitfall:The Mayan Adventure for the Jaguar is obviously 16 bit. Pathetic. This game wasn't worthy of the Jaguar's hardware. This game was awesome for the Sega Genesis and the SNES but those were 16 bit game consoles. Activision should've given this version far superior graphics but they didn't. If you own a Jaguar, pass this game.
