Gremlins - The Atari Times

Gremlins

Lop off some gremlin heads
by Gregory D. George

February 18, 2002
I am officially a loser. I don't even own this game. The minute I find it, however, I will be adding it to my meager 5200 collection. Not because of it's license or because I think Gizmo is cool, but because this is one of the FEW movie to game translations that I actually enjoy.

How can I review this game if I don't even own it, you may ask? Because since I read the review back in 1983, I've wanted to play this game. And the minute I got my hands into 5200 emulation, it was one of the first games I tried. And I've loved it ever since!

You play the role of Billy Peltzer, owner of Gizmo and all-around nice guy. Except when it comes to Gremlins attacking his mother with a Christmas tree! Billy grabs the sword from the wall and begins the most enjoyable beheading-fest this side of Transylvania. You must return all the Mogwai to their pen and kill all the Gremlins. This sounds simple, but there are a few rules to remember! Don't allow the Mogwai to eat after midnight or you will have more Gremlins to deal with. And don't let them touch water or they will multiply. Lastly, should you wait too long to finish a round, the sunlight comes out and kills everything! So be quick!

The animation and sound are superb. But it is really the little touches that make this game. Turn on the TV to distract the Gremlins! Beware of the Gremlin in the kitchen who will toss out food for the Mogwai to eat. Watch as the cute little Mogwai follow you towards the pen. This game truly captures the essence of the movie.
