Yeah, I can't seem to do much at all. Where's my pack mule?

Good

Lord of the Rings is a homebrew text adventure, and an overall interesting game. How can one of JRR Tolkien's huge books be jammed into a 4K 2600 cart, you may ask? Well, the answer is that the game is an extremely condensed version of the story... and it works rather well.

The control isn't perfect, but we're talking about a text adventure on the 2600 using a joystick. The control is satisfactory, and once you've progressed through a couple scenes you will have no trouble figuring it out. There are no graphics or sound to speak of in this game.

If you haven't read the books or seen the movies, where have you been? And on top of that, you probably won't understand what to do at points in the game. If you've done either of the above, you will be able to recognize many plot points and you'll know just what to do... which doesn't take away at all from the fun little title that this is for those of us who have done these things. If you haven't though, you may want to think twice before investing in this game. Instead, go to Blockbuster and rent the movies or visit your local bookstore and get the books first.

LOTR by Gregory D. George 2006-11-09 23:53:29
I met the programmer of this back in St. Louis for JagFest 2002. Since I don't get around much, he was the first 2600 coder I'd ever met. At the time (2002) I wasn't all that excited about LOTR, but the movies really changed that. Anyway, the game itself is kind of neat being set in Middle Earth and all. But I couldn't even figure out the first task! (Getting Sam to take your pack.) Ah well...
