I never got to play the arcade version of
Xybots until after I had the Lynx version, and after playing the
arcade game I was only more impressed by the job that was done on this
great little title. The graphics are well done, with the feeling that
great care was taken to get this game to look just like the arcade
counterpart. Everything looks clean and crisp.
The sounds in the game are great, with some really nice background music
thrown into the game. A few sounds are missing from the arcade game, but
they aren't too missed. The gameplay is what matters, and the Lynx
version of this game pulls it off with style...
Before I go on, I know that I am influenced from having played the Lynx
version first. In the arcade version, turning gives you a nice turning
graphic. The Lynx game simply isn't powerful enough to do the same nice
turning things, and instead you just move 90 degrees all at the same
time. If you start by playing in this way, I doubt you'll miss the
turning animation. If you have played the arcade game for a long time
though, it is missed.
So anyway, about the gameplay, you must make it through lots of
different mazes, destroying the evil Xybots along the way. The
game starts off relatively easy, but the difficulty goes up and soon it
is a challenge to make it through the mazes alive. You can always bring
in backup by ComLynxing with a friend. This makes the game even more fun
by allowing you and your partner to split the Xybots
exterminating responsibilities.
Overall, Xybots is a great title for the Lynx, and one of the
easiest and cheapest titles to get. Don't let it slip by you!
